Two mechanisms can disrupt metabolism.
One is an ischemic stroke (or ischemia) , which is an occlusion of an arterial vessel. The blockage keeps blood from getting to an area of the brain. The other mechanism is a hemorrhage, which is a bursting artery causing blood to accumulate around nearby brain tissue.
In Stroke for Dummies, ischemia is referred to as a “white stroke” and hemorrhage, a “red stroke” (Marler, 2005).
Ischemic stroke is much more common than hemorrhage.
