Why is a franchise the best solution, and why don’t all franchises succeed for their franchisees?

Many people dream of having their own business. They want financial freedom, control over their time, the ability to travel, negotiate, feel significant, and know they hold power over their own decisions. Building a business is not for everyone; it’s hard work. Statistics show that only 5% of companies survive after 10 years. When I started my construction business in 2008, I observed the top 20 design and construction companies in the Belarusian market. Today, only 3-4 remain, and it’s doubtful they have retained the same market share or advantages they once held.

Starting a business doesn’t require much—just a desire and a modest investment of up to $10,000. However, the franchise market is flooded with mediocre offerings, some of which are dressed up with enticing branding but offer little substance. Certain companies specialize in packaging a business for sale, but often the material is insufficient, resulting in poor business outcomes. Influencers like Ayaz Shabutdinov and others have saturated the franchise market with questionable options, leaving little chance for success to those who lack business expertise. A “solution package” can end up being entirely the buyer's responsibility if it fails. Imagine buying blueprints for a Mercedes only to end up building a broken-down car. Without quality knowledge and guidance, people become frustrated, lose time, and waste money.

The Reality of Building a Strong Business

Business is more complex than it seems. A resilient, evolving business needs constant monitoring, strategic adjustments, and adaptability. It requires a strong team, a supportive network, and guidance from experienced mentors. Starting a restaurant chain, for example, requires advice from those in the industry, not just any business owner. Running a business is akin to professional sports; not everyone can be an Olympian, but anyone with the desire to try can benefit from the experience. Success isn’t guaranteed, especially with factors like economic downturns. My company has weathered five crises, and though some left marks, we adapted each time.

Is a Construction Franchise Right for You?

If you’re not willing to work hard, don’t enjoy networking, expect easy profits, or lack a larger goal, then a construction franchise might not be for you. This industry requires resilience and a commitment to learning. I don’t recommend taking out loans with monthly interest unless you have a steady income.

How Much Can You Earn in Construction?

A competitive construction company with a solid brand can have a profit margin of 100-500%. An average small project can yield a profit of at least $20,000, and some projects generate hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on scope and execution. A company owner should aim for an annual income of at least $100,000. In some cases, a single large project can cover expenses and provide earnings for several years.

How Quickly Can You Recoup Your Franchise Investment?

Plan to recoup your investment within a year. However, you might recover it sooner depending on the project and pricing. In construction, a $10,000 investment is relatively small, but success depends on choosing the right project with a suitable margin.

Challenges in the Construction Industry:

Challenges include ineffective marketing, cash flow gaps, poor project management, high costs, lack of skilled personnel, and competition. A business needs a budget for the year, clear project timelines, supply plans, and a solid sales strategy. I provide all these documents and guidance at PrivateHouse, along with individual consultations.

What Licenses and Certifications Are Needed?

Licensing and certification requirements in the CIS countries are similar for tasks like electrical, plumbing, and structural work. Each franchisee works with us to understand their local requirements and find the best path to obtain these licenses.

Challenges in Architecture and Design:

Architects and designers often produce designs that are difficult or costly to implement. Delivering a feasible, budget-friendly product requires experience, a strong network of contractors, and a clear alignment between design and client needs.

Difficulties in Launching a Construction Business Independently:

Setting up a business requires handling documents, contracts, licenses, marketing, and client acquisition. However, with the right budget, work plans, brand development, and strategic planning, these challenges can be managed. I provide guidance and real-life templates at PrivateHouse, helping new business owners avoid common pitfalls.

Why Won't Everyone Succeed in Managing a Construction Company?

Construction is demanding, high-margin work that requires resilience, technological savvy, and a solid team. It’s not a franchise for coffee shops; it relies on human skill more than equipment. Knowing the challenges in advance will save time and reduce frustration.

Why Is the PrivateHouse Franchise the Best Option in Construction?

There’s a strategy known as “follow the leader.” In essence, replicating someone else’s experience is the foundation of any business in its early stages. The idea comes first, then we look around and find someone who’s successful, and try to copy what they’re doing. However, this is challenging, error-prone, time-consuming, and inefficient. It’s important to assess the success of that experience and identify exactly what you need now. My franchise stands out because I don’t just hand over documents; I provide continuous support for six months or, for a full cycle, up to a year. This is crucial. I help the business, and we work on a schedule where I am there to guide you, help you avoid mistakes, and increase your chances of success.

I don’t believe in franchises that only pass along materials, basic knowledge, or some information. Such franchisees often make the same mistakes—even with ready-made documents—because adapting them correctly for your target audience and market is key. Without mentorship, construction franchises will struggle to succeed.

I personally consult and work with franchisees every two weeks during online meetings. If you want your business to thrive for more than 10 years, look for a strong partner. Quality comes at a price, and getting a mediocre template means blending into the crowd and compromising your chances of success from the start.
